UWS Research Students

If you are a postgraduate research student at UWS, we have a range of PGR-specific opportunities to take part in the revised 2020 Learning, Teaching and Research Conference.

Full-time, part-time and distance students are all welcome to take part.  See below for more information about the existing postgraduate elements of the conference: Three Minute Thesis, posters and lay summaries.  The Doctoral College will soon announce how UWS postgraduates will be able to take part in the revised conference – keep watching this website or Twitter (@UWS_PGR, @UniWestScotland and @UWSAcademy) for more information.

Please be aware that you will NOT be eligible for postgraduate prizes for any presentations, workshops or posters selected for the peer reviewed conference.  Only submissions via the postgraduate application form will be eligible for postgraduate prizes.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT)

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic competition developed by the University of Queensland, Australia. Its success has led to the establishment of local and national competitions in several countries.

The University’s full-time research students in their third year of study are required to submit presentations for 3MT, with the winning entrant having a chance to progress to the UK finals hosted by Vitae. The competition rules are simple: staff and students undertaking a doctorate have three minutes and one slide to present to an intelligent, lay audience and a judging panel. No gimmicks, props, singing or dancing allowed; just really interesting presentations.

3MT challenges our doctoral candidates to present a compelling spoken presentation on their research topic and its significance in just three minutes. Conference delegates will have the opportunity to attend the finalists’ presentations.
